AMA July 2023: Jill Marr

The AMA (Ask-Me-ANYTHING) program is a series of interactive Zoom video meetings on the web where attendees can ask questions pertaining to their writing and publishing projects. A publishing industry professional, the featured agent, would answer these questions in these monthly live meetings.

The featured agent for our July 21, 2023 meeting is Jill Marr, a senior agent at the Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency.

Jill graduated from SDSU with a BA in English with an emphasis in creative writing and a minor in history. In a former life, she worked in the creative services department at a local television station.

Jill began her publishing career as Sandra Dijkstra’s assistant the week after 9/11. She also wrote features and ads for Pages, the literary magazine for people who love books, and wrote book ads for publishing houses.

Building her own list now for the past 15 years, Jill is interested in adult commercial fiction, with an emphasis in romance, psychological suspense, horror, Gothic, and historical (presently she’s especially keen for reimagining of folklore or Greek mythology, and stories adjacent from well-known classics, told from a different perspective). She is also looking for non-fiction projects in the areas of current events, science, history, narrative non-fiction, sports, politics, health & nutrition, pop culture, and music.

    I find these AMA events so enlightening. One of the agents mentioned how when you first start out you have a total misconception of what is going to happen. But listening to these professionals help make me feel more confident and capable of getting it right.
