WINNER of the SHIRLEY FONG-TORRES SCHOLARSHIP
Congratulations goes to Zack Llull
Tina Pavao (Shirley’s Daughter) selected Zack Llull as the winner of this student scholarship. Tina says “Zack did his eighth grade graduation project with a culinary focus inspired by one of Shirley’s cookbooks. he is now sixteen and attends Waldorf High School in San Francisco.” Martin Yan of Yan Can Cook and a long-time friend of Shirley’s will recognize Zack at the 2012 SFWC on Saturday.
WINNER OF THE BHARTI KIRCHNER ETHNIC WRITING SCHOLARSHIP
Congratulations goes to Lida Sideris
Ms. Sideris’s SPIRIT IN DEFIANCE is a novel that begins in Persia in 1925 and then follows three generations of Persian women and the breakdown of traditions. It is loosely based on the author’s grandmother’s life in Iran and America, as well as that of her daughter and granddaughter.

KEVIN SMOKLER SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
The San Francisco Writers Conference is pleased to announce the winners of the Kevin Smokler Scholarship to Steven Browne of La Canada, California and Karin O’Mahoney of Hawaii.
Twenty eight people wrote essays on Why Writing is Important and the winners were not only well-written but intriguing and imaginative. We look forward to meeting them at the conference.
WINNER of the ALEXIS MASTERS SCHOLARSHIP for SPIRITUAL WRITING
The winner of the 2012 scholarship is J. Dylan Yates from San Diego, CA. Dylan submitted a fascinating novel called THE BELIEF IN ANGELS, an historical family saga centered on two tough protagonists, one who somehow survives the murderous progroms against Ukranian Jews in the 1920s, the death camps of WWII Europe, and a dysfunctional family when he finally reaches America, and his granddaughter, who survives an excruciatingly painful and abusive childhood in the tumultuous 1960s and gains a compassionate heart and wisdom beyond her years.

SAN FRANCISCO WRITERS CONFERENCE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
Congratulations goes to Aimee Renee Lowenstern
Aimee is an 8th grader at Mountain View Montessori School in Reno, NV. She writes every day. She has been writing since she could dictate to her father (about age 3). Last year, 2011, Aimee self-published a poetry book on lulu.com called “Paper Carnival”.
THE WILEY/SFWC SOTA STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
We are so pleased to announce the supremely talented winners of the Wiley/SFWC School of the Arts Scholarships. Peter Wiley, Chairman of the Board of John Wiley & Sons has been the driving force behind this scholarship for almost a decade. Director of the SOTA Creative Writing program Heather Woodward has the hard task of selecting the students each year.
Alex Pollak is a poet and actor. He is co-editor of the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts Creative Writing Department literary journal, umlaut, and works with Dave Eggers as an editor for McSweeney’s Best American Non-Required Reading 2012.
Vanessa Cabrera is writing her first book of poetry and is co-editor of the school’s Creative Writing Department literary journal, umlautand is an ardent environmentalist and advocate of social justice.
Mollie Cueva is a junior in the Creative Writing Department. A fiction writer and poet, Mollie is also an intern at the California Academy of Sciences and has been dancing in Carnaval for years.
Rebecca Straznickas is working on her first full-length feature screenplay. A senior in Creative Writing Department, she started the department’s new blogsite, www.sotacw.org, where she is the principal writer and photographer.
DR. REUVEN JAFFE SCHOLARSHIP
The winner is April Chelsea Mosley of San Francisco. April is writing a book that will reflect Jewish history and will be of interest to the general public. We’re very pleased and we’re sure that Dr.Jaffe would approve!
JOYCE TURLEY SCHOLARSHIP
The Joyce Turley Scholarship program brings some of the most talented adult writers to the SFWC each year. This year she has given scholarships to FOUR adult writers to attend the SFWC. Thank you, Joyce!
